Branding a world class music hall

VBAT was commissioned to refresh the visual style of the campaigns of Het Concertgebouw, one of the finest concert halls in the world.. With no real graphic system in place, all existing communications were inconsistent in terms of photography, layout, use of graphic elements and logo lock-ups.

Inspiration was drawn from the classical architecture of the building itself. Atop the Great Hall sits a gilded lyra, the instrument of Apollo, the Greek god of music. As a highly recognised symbol of Het Concertgebouw, it’s outer shape forms the basis for a new graphic system.

Colour inspiration came from the rich velvet and leather upholstery found inside the building.

As a finishing touch we reintroduced the Futura family as the Het Concertgebouw brand typeface. Ultimately flexible in use, we created a design system that can be applied easily across all communication platforms, in both traditional or digital media. Reminiscent of the eight bars of a musical scale we created a new lock-up for the brand logo and pay-off. Set to music with an array of scales in various styles i.e. orchestral, jazz, percussive etc. it forms a highly memorable piece of audio branding for Het Concertgebouw.
